What you'll learn

- Be able to identify sustainable alternatives for manufacturing

Session 1 - Course Introduction
- Introduction to the course and to Instructor
- Introduction to Sustainability Strategies - Overview of sustainability Strategies 

Session 2 - Introduction to fibre types
- Identifying fibre types/origins (plant, animal, speciality, blended fibres, recycled, innovative, man-made)
- Textile lifecycles (natural and synthetic)

Session 3 - Deeper dive into fibre and fabric types with a focus on natural plant and animal fibres:
- Fibre to Fabric
- Sourcing sustainable textiles textile processing, energy, water use
- Sustainable materials (cause and effects of textiles on the environment)

Session 4 - Finishing product and process
- Dyes: process, energy, water use (causes and effects on the environment)
- Focus on dyes and processes
- Textile dyes (pros and cons: natural and synthetic)

Session 5 - Focus on craft / Slow Fashion vs Mass Production
- Eco labels: packaging and labels

Session 6 - Revision
- Review and discuss final assignments
Tara St James
Fashion Designer

Tara has over 15 years' of design experience with an emphasis on street-wear. In 2009, Tara launched her sustainable fashion brand, Study NY, which uses ethically sourced materials and has been awarded the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation prize.
Tara also lectures at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC where she teaches sustainable textiles.
Most recently Tara worked as a Production Coordinator and Research Fellow in the Sustainable Strategies Lab for Pratt’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator
